IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)
IASTM is a non-invasive manual therapy technique that uses specific instruments to assess and treat soft tissue. Similar to some other manual therapy techniques, these tools are used to target muscles, tendons, ligaments and/or fascia.
Most IASTM tools are made of surgical steel with an edge that is used to apply gentle pressure over the treatment area. Typically this motion is repeated over the affected area multiple times, this causes micro-trauma to the area, which leads to increased inflammation, which in turn encourages healing processes in the body.

IASTM is proposed to have the following benefits:
Pain Relief
Improved Mobility & Range of Motion.
Promotion of Tissue Healing
Improved Circulation
Reduced Muscle Soreness
Enhanced Recovery
Types of IASTM Tools:
Soft Tissue Instruments are said to have evolved from the Chinese Medicine technique of Gua Sha. Gua Sha tools however, are primarily used as a superficial skin treatment that helps increase circulation and lymphatic drainage. They are typically made of smooth stone such as Jade and may even be part of your skin care routine.
There are a variety of companies that make the types of Soft Tissue Instruments that may be used by your Physical Therapist.
You may have heard of: Graston Technique, HawkGrips, RockBlades, etc.

Side Effects:
IASTM tools can cause bruising, redness, or tenderness to the soft tissue area worked. This side effect is more common in areas that have been injured or tense for long periods of time. The mild bruising or petechiae is normal and should clear up within a few days.
Who can have IASTM:
This modality isn’t recommended for patients with certain blood or bone disorders, or fragile skin.
Additionally this modality isn’t recommended for patients with open wounds, rashes or infection.
Be sure to thoroughly discuss your medical conditions, medications and questions with your physical therapist prior to treatment so that you can be informed of the potential risks and the benefits!
