You are an individual, and therefore your treatment plan should be tailored to you!
At Intention Physiotherapy and Movement we will develop a custom therapeutic exercise program to support your recovery, progress, and goals.
~
Individualized Therapeutic Exercises are assigned based on your own abilities, needs and goals. This exercise program is paired with your in-clinic physiotherapy treatments to facilitate a comprehensive recovery.
In layman's terms: your individualized therapeutic exercise plan is your Homework.
Do I have to?
Technically no. BUT, it is highly recommended that you do.
When combined with your in-clinic treatments, these exercises can help to greatly improve your results!
Will my therapist know if I didn’t do my exercises?
Yes. Quite often there is quicker and more notable progress with regular completion of exercise programs.
The exercises prescribed to you, when done consistently and correctly can also assist your therapist in determining how well your body is responding to treatment. For example, if you do the exercises consistently but still aren’t seeing progress, it is a good indicator to your therapist that something else could be inhibiting the healing process, or that changes need to be made to the plan.
What kind of exercises will my physiotherapist suggest?
This varies from patient to patient, but the routines can include a range of exercises such as stretches, strength training, balance exercises, breathing exercises, and others.
Do I need special equipment?
This depends on your needs/goals, but usually not. Most of the time your physical therapist can tailor your exercise program to the equipment you have/have access to.
If there is specific equipment that would be worth investing in, your physical therapist will discuss this with you.
How are Individualized Therapeutic Exercises different from what I see/do at the gym?
The general focus for exercises you commonly see at the gym is to increase strength, muscle mass and cardiovascular fitness.
There is a lot of overlap between therapeutic exercises and "gym exercises".
However, Individualized Therapeutic Exercises are chosen based on specific injuries, conditions, and limitations with an emphasis on restoring function and movement patterns.
How much time will this exercise routine take?
Most individualized treatment plans only take about 5-15 minutes/day, but done consistently they can greatly help to increase your progress!
And when you combine your therapeutic exercise program with other physical activities that you enjoy this can be a great way to maintain fitness and function!
