There are two more common types of tape utilized in physiotherapy:

Kinesiology or KT Tape - is an elastic cotton adhesive tape that provides flexibility and stretch. It is applied directly to the skin. It can be applied and left on 3-5 days.

This tape comes in a myriad of colors. It can be found in large continuous rolls, or in a roll of pre-cut pieces.

Athletic Tape - is a white cotton tape that is much more rigid and is usually applied over a layer of Pro Wrap to protect the skin from its strong adhesive backing. This tape is generally used to create immobilizing support to a joint to prevent and protect from injury. Where KT tape can be worn for several days, Athletic tape is typically only worn for short durations.

For the purposes of this blog we will be discussing the application and benefits of KT Tape.

Common Uses of KT Tape:

  • Injury Recovery

  • Pain Relief

  • Athletic Performance

  • Postural Corrections

  • Swelling & Bruising

Benefits of KT Tape:

With its unique properties of being both sticky and stretchy, KT can help in a number of ways:

  • Improved Circulation & Decompression of affected tissues.

  • Enhanced Awareness of the injured area.

  • Pain Reduction.

  • Sensation of Muscle Support & Stability.

Considerations When Using KT Tape

  • Allergies - Discuss any allergies you may have to adhesives with your Physiotherapist before KT Tape is applied. If your skin is sensitive, it may be best to avoid taping all together.

  • Proper Application - Before taping yourself it is best to have your physiotherapist show you the proper way to apply the tape for your specific needs. Application is dependent on the injury and what you are trying to achieve.

  • Removal - It is best to let the KT Tape run its course and only remove once it starts to peel on it’s own. However should you need to remove it early, it is best practice to soak the tape in water, such as in the tub or shower. And gently peel it back on itself. Once the tape is removed, ensure that you use gentle cleanser and water to clean the area of any residual adhesive, and then pat the area to let it dry.
