If you are an athlete who has been injured you are likely familiar with the phrase “Return to Sport.”

  • This phrase is used to describe a process that involves getting an athlete back to their sport in the state they were prior to injury.

Return to Sport (RTS) includes 3 general stages:

  • Return to Participation

  • Return to Training

  • Return to Competition

In full stride, an athlete showcases their speed and agility while running on a city pavement.

Ideally, within these 3 general stages, we want to make sure we are covering the following criteria:

  • Allowing for sufficient healing time.

  • Completing a formal rehabilitation program.

  • Achieving full sport-specific range of motion without pain.

  • Demonstrating sport-specific stability, strength, agility, and skills.

  • Passing scores on functional tests.

Don't forget - The Mental Game:

When sidelined by an injury it can be tempting to “push through the pain” or skip steps in your rehabilitation program.

However, injuries can predispose an athlete to re-injury, which can equate to more recovery time in the long run.

While it may be frustrating to sit on the sidelines while your teammates continue to play, it is important that you as an injured athlete stick with your RTS plan so you can come back strong and ready!
