Surgery can be a life-changing event, whether it's a major operation or a minor procedure. Recovery doesn't end in the operating room, and Physical Therapy (PT) plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process. Today we are going to cover some of the reasons why Physiotherapy is important after surgery.

1. Accelerated Recovery

Engaging in targeted therapeutic exercises can help reduce recovery time and improve your overall outcome. Your body needs time to heal while still safely advancing your exercises and working to improve your functional movement.

2. Pain Management

Post-surgical pain is common, but it doesn't have to be debilitating. Physical therapists employ various techniques, including manual therapy, modalities, and exercise, to help improve pain management.

3. Restoring Movement

Surgery can result in stiffness and decreased range of motion. Physical therapy focuses on gentle stretching and mobility exercises that are targeted at restoring function and flexibility. Restoring movement is essential for performing daily activities and preventing complications like joint stiffness or muscle loss.

4. Strength Building

Muscle weakness may happen from prolonged inactivity after surgery or immobilization of an injury (ie: casting for a fracture).

A targeted exercise approach to help rebuild muscle strength and endurance can be a vital part of returning to your pre-surgery activities.

5. Preventing Complications

After surgery there can be risks of developing complications such as blood clots, infections, or joint contractures. Physical therapy can help minimize these risks through education, monitoring, and appropriate exercises.

6. Support and Motivation

Recovering from surgery can be physically and emotionally challenging. Whether it's learning how to properly walk with your crutches, utilize other mobility aids, or helping you stay confident and committed to your rehabilitation goals - Having a professional by your side can make a significant difference in your recovery journey!
